It has no direct connection with the external world, so it has to make do with whatever the neocortex feeds it. There is no way it can differentiate between an accurate rendering of the environment and the memories, fantasies, and imaginations made by the powerful neocortex. For the limbic system, it is the same if a ferocious rhinoceros charges at you that if you are watching a Godzilla movie. It takes some time for the neocortex to learn how to add little tags to the information it sends downwards, such as “this is a movie,” “this is a fantasy,” “this is a dream.” I hope you got all your tags right when you were little. I know many grown-ups who react to their fancies and fears as if they were actually happening. In any case, the emotional reaction would still occur, even if tempered by the extra information of the tags.
